On December 15, 2015, College of The Albemarle held a special evening to honor Col. Gail Halvorsen and the crew of the "Spirit of Freedom". Every year they have come to Dare County to help us remember the Berlin Airlift through a Candy Drop held at the Dare County Airport. The event was hosted by Tina Bradley, a continuing education instructor at College of The Albemarle. The program's keynote was by Col Gail Halvorsen. The evening also included performances by Milton Bullock, one of the original Drifters, and Mary Tate, a former Motown recording artist. Others on the program are Mayor Pro-Tem of the Town of Manteo, Darrell Collins, and Tim Chopp, Executive Director of the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation. The evening also features Karen Edmond who was a child during the Berlin Airlift in West Berlin.
