Did you know, 27 years ago today on July 9, 1999, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was carefully placed onto its new foundation after completing a remarkable engineering feat. Threatened by shoreline erosion and the ever-changing Outer Banks barrier islands, the lighthouse was moved 2,900 feet inland to protect it for future generations. What began with the lighthouse moving its first ten feet on June 17, 1999, ended with the successful relocation of the 4,800-ton structure to the site where it stands today. More than two decades later, the move remains an incredible example of historic preservation in action and a reminder that protecting our nation`s stories is an ongoing effort.
